The encoder performance integrity is assured when a good mechanical assembly is in operation. The shaft encoder is a high speed pulse generator - therefore it is a high precision device that needs accurate rotary motion. To solve coupling problems these flexible devices with the following features should be used:
- Torsionally rigid;
- Accommodate axial and radial misalignment;
- Accommodate end play by elastic deformation;
- Accurate rotation concentricity.
The flexible couplings must be used in order to avoid over-charge on the encoder shaft, that will drastically reduce its life and operation characteristic - in other words the reliability guaranteed at the moment of delivery.
It is necessary to take into account that the average life of ball bearings is inversely proportional to the 3rd power of the charge applied. i.e. A 5 time over-charge causes a reduction of bearings life from 50,000 hrs. to 400 hrs.
